Lesson 1: Expectations: Get comfortable saying NO to get to YES!
Your only goal is to get 3-6 clients. That’s not that many, right? In order to get there, we have to experience a transformational mindset shift.
You’ll get comfortable saying NO and coming to terms with the fact that you’ll be saying NO to the majority of opportunities that come your way.
Think of it like finding 3-6 new best friends. Yeah, you have “friends” that you hang out with once every few months… or the people you just grab a drink with every now and again.
But then there’s your close friends. The ones you can chat with on the phone for hours, or lean on when times get tough. Those are like the clients you’ll be finding, and sometimes they take a bit of patience to get there, but rest assured – they are as excited to meet you as you are to meet them!

Where should you start getting clients? Start with your existing clients, then move to past clients, then to referral relationships, and only turn to cold prospects after that.
As a copywriter with 1+ years experience, you likely have a list of clients you’ve served or are serving. So long as they are a good fit for your new model, I’ll teach you how to approach them with one goal in mind – getting a call set up.
Either way, you’ll learn how and why to target each of these potential client segments and leave this video armed with everything you need to begin your outreach.

Part 6: Secrets of Successful Client Relationships
It’s smooth sailing, until it’s not right? One of my favorite quotes by Franklin Roosevelt, “A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor.”
Well let me tell you… I’ve faced some rough, choppy, monsoon seas accompanied by gale force winds in my time.
And guess what? Nearly every time was my own dang fault.
This section will teach you how to navigate rough waters (which are inevitable when it comes to relationships).
Use the tactics you’ll learn in these 3 lessons and I assure you that client conflict will transform from stress into a growth opportunity.
I’ve even re-negotiated higher fees and stricter boundaries using these simple strategies.
Lesson 1: How to manage client relationships with a successful workflow
Ever have a client come out of the woodwork with a last minute demand? Or creep up on a deadline? Or wait until the 11th hour to submit their revisions on a project?
That won’t happen again when you use this workflow.
Dang near every time I’ve felt taken advantage of, or that my clients were steering my life, it was because I didn’t have a clearly defined workflow that my clients agreed to.
Once I cracked that code, I could respectfully push back to not only respect my own boundaries (and sanity), but it helped me produce my best work.
Lesson 2: Handling conflict as an opportunity
Have you seen the copywriting FB groups where someone rants about a client and everyone responds, “Fire them and walk away!” Well… that ain’t always the best answer.
Don’t get me wrong. There’s a time and a place to walk away, BUT that’s a last resort.
Conflict truly is an opportunity. It resembles one of two things. 1) Unclear expectations between you and the client, or 2) Scope creep (which is a huge compliment that they find you tremendously valuable).
When you rise to the occasion and handle client conflict with an open heart and a clear outcome in mind, whatever happens next is just destiny.
I’ve been in a hair-pulling, rage-filled, anxiety-ridden state ready to fire a client and flip the bird, to taking a deep breath, preparing a plan to reach a resolution, and saving the relationship for many years to come.
I’ve also used this to re-negotiate higher rates (more on that in the next lesson).
Whatever the outcome, you’ll grow personally, be better prepared for next time, and feel damn good about how you handled it.
Lesson 3: When to go above and beyond, and when to increase retainers
When it comes to developing long-term client relationships, there’s a fine line between delivering top-notch service and getting taken advantage of.
I’ve gone above and beyond for too long that it begins to set unrealistic expectations (that bit me in the ass later down the road as I got busier), and there’s times that it made me feel resentful.
At the same time, I’ve had situations where clients ask for something small and I say yes for no other reason than a genuine desire to strengthen the relationship and make them happy.
Remember, we’re focusing on LIFETIME VALUE of a client. I’ve had 1 client pay me nearly to date (over the course of our relationship).
It’s a fine line between when to say “yes” and just do it versus “yes, and…” let’s revisit how we’re working together to see if there’s a need to increase my involvement (and thus, YOUR monthly rate).
This video will show you how to differentiate between the two, and how to tactfully and successfully renegotiate a higher rate.
(P.S. I have renegotiated higher rates with about 50% of my clients after they saw how much value I contributed and they just kept wanting more.)
