Explore digital ethnography and AI-assisted customer research with Abi Awomosu. The course includes recorded lessons, frameworks and over 500 prompts for discovering and validating insights.

The Billion Person Focus Group by Abi Awomosu explores a research process that starts with customer conversations and moves from discovery to validation. It combines digital ethnography, AI-assisted analysis and reusable research systems to turn observations into hypotheses for further testing.
The downloadable course includes recorded lessons, prompts and frameworks, with more than 40 hours of self-paced material and over 500 prompts. The download size is 4.19 GB.
Research skills in The Billion Person Focus Group
- Master the split between observation, interpretation and validated conclusion
- Develop sampling judgement for forums, communities, tickets and sales calls
- Learn where AI clusters evidence and where it fabricates or erases dissent
- Apply triangulation across independent qualitative and behavioral sources
- Build source audits that treat AI personas as simulations, not evidence
- Implement validation through interviews, surveys or experiments
Finding insight in customer conversations
Forums, communities, support tickets and sales calls can reveal how people describe their needs in their own words. These conversations may contain frustrations, workarounds and social meanings that a questionnaire does not bring out.
The material is not automatically representative: people choose whether to participate, channels encourage different behavior, and vocal or dissatisfied participants can dominate. Keeping the speaker, date, setting and surrounding exchange alongside a quotation helps preserve the context needed to interpret it.
Pattern discovery involves comparing individual observations with tentative explanations. Recurring language, contradictions, exceptions, changes in behavior and differences between groups can all inform the analysis. Independent sources can then be compared to see whether a proposed pattern holds beyond one channel.
Language models can help sort passages, suggest labels and find possible counterexamples. Repetition alone does not establish that a claim is true, however, and generated themes can merge unlike situations, invent patterns or obscure minority views.
Listening-based research methods
Digital ethnography examines behavior, language and norms within online settings over time. Its attention to culture and context makes interpretation important, as does ethical handling of material from people who may not expect it to be used for research.
Social listening and discourse analysis examine terms, narratives, sentiment and changes across public conversation. Their breadth is useful, but platform demographics, algorithms and irony can make simple volume and sentiment measures misleading.
Support-ticket and sales-call analysis draws on first-party operational conversations to examine objections and breakdowns close to actual decisions. These records reflect existing customers, prospects and company processes, rather than the whole market.
Qualitative coding and thematic analysis use a documented codebook and a process of comparison and revision. AI can assist with sorting, but its output still needs to be checked against the underlying passages.
Mixed-method research combines listening with interviews, surveys, behavioral data or experiments. It can help test how far a finding reaches or investigate causality, while requiring additional resources and explicit sampling and validation choices.
The Billion Person Focus Group approach
The course brings digital ethnography together with AI-assisted qualitative analysis and research-system design. Its topics include research agents, source selection, pattern discovery, triangulation and audience analysis, as well as listening systems and visual landscape mapping.
The discovery-before-validation sequence treats initial findings as a basis for decision-ready hypotheses rather than established facts. The curriculum also addresses AI personas and validation through surveys, interviews and experiments.
Abi Awomosu has more than 20 years of experience and has mentored or advised over 200 startups. Her background includes research and analytics roles at Apple, Uber, eBay and Meta.
The program is aimed at researchers, strategists, consultants, founders and product leaders. Basic familiarity with ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini is recommended, but programming is not required.
Evidence, limitations and responsible use
Online conversation is self-selected and can overrepresent vocal or extreme participants. Repetition can also result from platform design, coordination or duplicated content rather than broad demand.
AI can organize supplied material, but it can also invent details, flatten dissent and reproduce training bias. Generated findings need source links and human review; AI personas remain simulations rather than evidence from real people. The NIST AI Risk Management Framework offers a reference for documenting risks, measurement and human oversight.
A finding from listening remains a hypothesis until it is tested with real respondents or behavior. The method alone does not establish prevalence, causality, forecast accuracy or commercial outcomes, and workflows may change as AI tools evolve.
Using forum content, support tickets or sales calls can raise questions about personal data, consent, confidentiality, data-protection law and platform terms. The research process also requires time to curate, clean and check material: prompts cannot compensate for a poor sample or lost quotation context.
Frequently asked questions
What does The Billion Person Focus Group cover?
It covers research agents, data sources, pattern discovery, audience analysis, listening systems and visual landscape mapping. It also addresses AI personas and testing hypotheses through surveys, interviews and experiments.
Who is the course suited to?
The course is intended for researchers, strategists, consultants, founders and product leaders working with customer or market insight.
Do I need programming experience?
Programming is not required. Basic familiarity with ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini is recommended.
What downloadable materials are included?
The course includes recorded lessons, prompts and frameworks. It contains more than 40 hours of self-paced material and over 500 prompts, with a download size of 4.19 GB.
Can AI personas replace research with real people?
No. AI personas simulate what a model predicts people might say; they are not observations of real respondents. The course addresses validation through methods such as interviews, surveys and experiments.
